The Antigua and Barbuda Social Security Board (ABSSB) administers the national contributory pension system established under the Social Security Act (Cap. 408).
Qualifying Requirements & Pension Formula:
- Pensionable Age: The official pension age is 65 years.
- Qualifying Threshold: A worker must accumulate at least 500 weekly contributions (approximately 9.6 to 10 years of formal insured employment).
- Benefit Calculation:
- Base Rate: 25% of average annual insurable earnings for the first 500 weeks.
- Increments: An additional 1% is added for each block of 50 weeks contributed in excess of 500 weeks.
- Maximum Rate: Capped at 60% of average insurable earnings.
- Minimum Pension Guarantee: A statutory minimum pension floor of EC$ 350.00 per month protects lower-income retirees.
- Age Grant: Workers who reach age 65 with fewer than 500 weeks receive a one-off lump-sum Age Grant based on total contributions paid.
