How Austrian Commuter Relief Works: Pendlerpauschale vs. Pendlereuro

In Austria, commuters benefit from a dual tax relief structure designed to offset the cost of traveling between home and workplace (§ 16 EStG):

1. Pendlerpauschale (Tax Base Deduction)

Acts as an income deduction (Freibetrag / Werbungskosten) that lowers your taxable income base. The financial value to you equals the allowance multiplied by your marginal income tax bracket (e.g. 40%).

2. Pendlereuro (Direct Tax Credit)

An explicit tax credit (Absetzbetrag) calculated as €2 per kilometer of simple one-way distance per year. Unlike a deduction, the Pendlereuro reduces your final tax bill Euro for Euro!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does home office (Telearbeit) affect my Pendlerpauschale?

If you work from home on certain days, your commute frequency tier adjusts accordingly. As long physically commute to work on at least 11 days per month, you receive the full 100% Pendlerpauschale. For 8-10 days, you receive 2/3; for 4-7 days, you receive 1/3.

What official document proves eligibility?

You must generate a Pendlerrechner printout (Formular L 34 EDV) from the official Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) online portal and submit it to your employer's payroll office.
