Working Hours, Overtime & Public Holidays in Belize (Labour Act)
The Labour Act (Chapter 297, Laws of Belize) establishes statutory hours of work and premium compensation rates to protect employees from exploitation:
1. Maximum 45-Hour Workweek (Section 117)
No worker shall be obliged to work for more than nine hours in any day or forty-five hours in any week, except for special industrial continuous-shift operations.
2. Time and One-Half Overtime (Section 118)
For all hours worked in excess of the normal daily or weekly maximum, the employer must pay wages at not less than one and a half times (150%) the regular basic hourly rate.
3. Double Time on Rest Days & Holidays (Section 119)
Work performed on scheduled rest days (Sundays) and on the 14 official public and bank holidays must be remunerated at double time (200% of the employee's regular hourly rate).
4. 14 Official Belize Public Holidays
Official holidays include Baron Bliss Day (March 9), Commonwealth Day (May 24), St. George's Caye Day (Sept 10), Independence Day (Sept 21), and Garifuna Settlement Day (Nov 19).
