Belize Income Tax (PAYE) & Social Security Board (SSB) Statutory Rules
In Belize, personal income taxation and social security contributions are governed by the Income and Business Tax Act (Chapter 55), administered by the Belize Tax Service (BTS), and the Social Security Act (Chapter 44):
1. Standard Tax-Free Relief
Under the Income and Business Tax Act, individuals earning BZ$ 26,000 or less per year are entitled to a basic exemption of BZ$ 24,000 (BZ$ 2,000/month). For earnings exceeding BZ$ 26,000, the standard basic deduction is BZ$ 20,000 per year (BZ$ 1,666.67/month).
2. Flat 25% PAYE Tax Rate
Taxable income exceeding the standard personal deduction is taxed at a flat statutory rate of 25.0%. Employers deduct PAYE each pay period and remit it to the Belize Tax Service by the 15th of the following month.
3. SSB Social Security Scale
Social security contributions are payable on weekly insurable earnings up to a ceiling of BZ$ 520.00/week (~BZ$ 2,253.33/month). The employee pays up to BZ$ 20.40/week while the employer contributes up to BZ$ 26.40/week.
4. Fixed Currency Peg (2:1 to USD)
The Belize Dollar has been officially pegged to the US Dollar at the fixed rate of BZ$ 2.00 = US$ 1.00 since May 1976, providing predictable foreign exchange conversion for international workers and expats.
