The Social Security Board (SSB) Pension Scheme in Belize

The Social Security Board (SSB) administers Belize's national defined-benefit pension system under the Social Security Act (Chapter 44):

1. The 500-Contribution Threshold

To qualify for a periodic retirement pension, an insured worker must have accumulated at least 500 paid or credited contributions (approx. 10 years of formal work). Reaching 500 weeks guarantees an initial 30% replacement rate.

2. Additional 2% Per 50 Contributions

For every 50 contributions completed above the initial 500 weeks, the statutory replacement rate increases by 2.0%, up to a maximum statutory cap of 60.0% of average insurable earnings.

3. Retirement Grant (Under 500 Weeks)

Workers who reach age 65 with fewer than 500 contributions (but at least 26 contributions) receive a one-off lump sum Retirement Grant equal to 6 times their average weekly earnings for each 50 contributions.

4. Early Retirement at Age 60

An insured person who reaches age 60 and completely retires from insurable employment can elect to claim their retirement pension early without waiting for age 65.
