Bermuda Motor Car Regulations & TCD Law

The Transport Control Department (TCD) enforces some of the world's most restrictive private vehicle ownership laws under the Motor Car Act 1951:

One Car Per Household Rule

  • Assessment Number: In Bermuda, each residential property assessment number is strictly permitted only one (1) private four-wheeled motor car.
  • Maximum Length: No private passenger car may exceed 180 inches (4,572 mm) in total length or 71 inches (1,803 mm) in width (Class H is the maximum legal ceiling).
  • Speed Limit: Island-wide maximum statutory speed limit is 35 km/h (22 mph).

Senior Discount & Examination

  • 50% Senior Relief: Bermudians and permanent residents aged 65 and over receive a 50% discount on the annual licence fee for one car.
  • Annual Examination: All private vehicles must pass an annual roadworthiness inspection testing brakes, steering, lights, emissions, and chassis integrity.
  • Currency: BD$ 1.00 = US$ 1.00.
