❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Canada Child Benefit (CCB)

Must both parents file a tax return to receive CCB? ▼

Yes. Even if one parent has zero income, both spouses or common-law partners must file their T1 income tax returns every single year by April 30. Failure by either partner to file will result in the CRA immediately stopping all monthly CCB payments starting in July.

How does shared custody affect CCB payments? ▼

If parents share custody of a child on an approximately equal basis (between 40% and 60% of the time), each parent receives exactly 50% of the CCB payment they would have received had the child lived with them full-time, calculated according to each parent's own individual AFNI.

Can RRSP contributions increase my CCB payments? ▼

Yes! Because the CCB is tested against your Adjusted Family Net Income (Line 23600), making deductible RRSP contributions lowers your AFNI dollar-for-dollar. For a family in the 13.5% clawback zone, every $1,000 contributed to an RRSP not only saves income tax but also yields an additional $135 in tax-free CCB payments.

Who qualifies for the Child Disability Benefit (CDB)? ▼

A child is eligible for the Child Disability Benefit (up to $3,322 per year) if they have a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions and have an approved Form T2201 (Disability Tax Credit Certificate) on file with the CRA.

Do new permanent residents or work permit holders qualify for CCB? ▼

Permanent residents, protected persons (refugees), and temporary residents with a valid work permit who have lived in Canada for the preceding 18 months and hold a valid permit in the 19th month are fully eligible to apply for CCB for their children.
