Frequently Asked Questions (Croatia Annual Leave & Vacation Rights)

What is the statutory minimum annual leave entitlement in Croatia? ▾

Under Article 76 of the Croatian Labor Act (Zakon o radu), every employee is entitled to paid annual leave of at least four weeks per calendar year. This corresponds to 20 working days for a standard 5-day week, or 24 working days for a 6-day week.

How is proportional annual leave (razmjerni dio) calculated for partial year employment? ▾

Under Article 78, an employee who does not work a full calendar year acquires 1/12th of their full annual leave entitlement for each completed month of employment with that employer.

How is unused annual leave paid out upon employment termination? ▾

Under Article 82, if an employment relationship ends and the worker has not used all acquired vacation days, the employer is legally obligated to pay cash compensation (naknada za neiskorišteni godišnji odmor) calculated on the basis of average earnings over the preceding three months.

Do public holidays count towards annual leave days in Croatia? ▾

No. Under Article 79, statutory public holidays (blagdani i neradni dani) and non-working days specified by law or contract do not count days. If a public holiday falls on a scheduled leave day, it is not deducted from the employee's vacation balance.

What wage compensation is paid while on annual leave? ▾

During annual leave, workers are entitled to wage compensation (naknada plaće) at least equal to their average monthly salary from the previous three months, including regular bonuses, seniority allowances, and overtime differentials earned in that reference period.
