Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How are residential electricity tariffs structured in Ethiopia by EEU? +

The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) operates a 7-tier stepped progressive tariff for residential consumers: Block 1 (0โ€“50 kWh) at 0.2730 ETB/kWh; Block 2 (51โ€“100 kWh) at 0.3564 ETB/kWh; Block 3 (101โ€“200 kWh) at 0.7728 ETB/kWh; Block 4 (201โ€“300 kWh) at 1.5645 ETB/kWh; Block 5 (301โ€“400 kWh) at 1.9961 ETB/kWh; Block 6 (401โ€“500 kWh) at 2.3243 ETB/kWh; and Block 7 (over 500 kWh) at 2.4807 ETB/kWh.

What deductions are made when buying a prepaid token via Telebirr or CBE Birr? +

When you purchase electricity prepaid tokens, EEU deducts the monthly fixed meter service charge (11 to 42 ETB depending on consumption level) on your first purchase of the month, plus 15% Value Added Tax (VAT), before converting the remaining balance into kilowatt-hour (kWh) units.

Is electricity consumption subject to VAT in Ethiopia? +

Yes. Value Added Tax (VAT) of 15% is levied under Proclamation No. 285/2002 on electricity energy consumption and service charges.

Why do I get fewer units (kWh) at the end of the month? +

Because EEU tariffs are progressive, cumulative monthly consumption pushes additional purchases into higher pricing tiers (e.g. from 0.35 ETB/kWh in Block 2 to 1.56 ETB/kWh in Block 4), yielding fewer kWh units per 100 Birr spent.

Can prepaid electricity tokens expire in Ethiopia? +

The generated 20-digit STS token code remains valid until entered into your keypad meter. Once keyed in, the purchased units remain on the meter until consumed.
