Norwegian Parental Leave (Foreldrepenger NAV)
Norway's Folketrygdloven provides a flexible, state-funded parental benefit model:
- 100% vs 80% Coverage: Parents choose between 49 weeks at 100% salary or 59 weeks at 80% salary. (Choosing 100% provides higher total cash compensation).
- Tripartite Division: The leave is split into three parts: Maternal Quota (Modrekvote), Paternal Quota (Fedrekvote), and a Shared Period (Fellesperiode) that parents can divide freely.
- The 6G Ceiling: NAV statutory benefits cap out at 6 times the National Insurance basic amount (6G). Many Norwegian public and private collective agreements pay the difference for higher-earning professionals.
