FLSA Rules on Overtime & Double Time Pay
Under the United States Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and international labor codes, non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a single workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half (1.5x) their regular rate of pay. While federal law does not mandate double time (2.0x) for weekends or holidays, many union contracts and state jurisdictions (such as California) require double time after 12 consecutive hours in a single workday.
