Sri Lanka Maternity Law (2018 Landmark Reform)

Prior to 2018, women in shops and offices received only 42 or 84 calendar days depending on child order. With the enactment of the Shop and Office Employees (Amendment) Act No. 14 of 2018, private sector entitlements were unified:

Key Statutory Rights for Expectant & Nursing Mothers

  • No Termination: Absolute immunity against redundancy, dismissal, or contract non-renewal by reason of pregnancy or confinement.
  • Light Duty Work: Pregnant employees cannot be given strenuous tasks, long standing hours, or night shifts (after 10 PM) in the 3 months leading up to delivery.
  • Nursing Breaks: Two paid breaks per day until the baby turns 12 months old.
