Swiss VAT (MWST) Compliance Guide
1. What are the official Swiss MWST rates since 1 January 2024?
Following the passage of the AHV 21 pension reform referendum, Swiss VAT rates increased across all categories on January 1, 2024:
- Standard Rate (Normalsatz): Increased from 7.7% to 8.1% for consulting, electronics, software, vehicles, alcohol, and general commercial services.
- Reduced Rate (Reduzierter Satz): Increased from 2.5% to 2.6% for food, tap water, pharmaceuticals, newspapers, magazines, and agricultural products.
- Special Accommodation Rate (Sondersatz fur Beherbergung): Increased from 3.7% to 3.8% for overnight hotel stays and serviced vacation accommodations.
2. Who is required to register for Swiss MWST?
Any commercial enterprise (Einzelfirma, GmbH, AG, or foreign corporation) generating at least CHF 100,000 in global turnover from taxable supplies is legally obligated to register with the Federal Tax Administration (ESTV). For non-profit sports and cultural associations, the mandatory threshold is CHF 250,000.
3. What is the Saldosteuersatz method?
The Net Tax Rate method (Saldosteuersatzmethode) allows eligible small businesses with annual turnover up to CHF 5.02 million and an annual VAT liability of up to CHF 108,000 to simplify their tax accounting. Under this method, businesses invoice clients at 8.1% or 2.6% but pay a predetermined flat sector rate (e.g. 6.2% for IT/consulting or 4.4% for architects) on their gross turnover without needing to prove input tax on purchase receipts.
