Tanzania Corporate Taxation Legal Framework
Corporate income tax and small business taxation are governed under the Income Tax Act, 2004 (Cap. 332) and the Tax Administration Act, 2015, enforced by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).
1. 30% Standard CIT
Resident companies are taxed on worldwide income at a flat statutory rate of 30% on taxable business profit determined under international financial reporting standards (IFRS) after tax adjustments.
2. Presumptive SME Tax
Individuals conducting business with annual turnover between 4M and 100M Tsh can pay simplified presumptive tax without complex corporate audit requirements, fostering formalization of informal traders.
3. Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)
To prevent continuous artificial tax shielding, companies reporting tax losses for three consecutive years of assessment are subjected to a minimum tax of 0.5% on gross revenue.
4. 100M Tsh VAT Threshold
Under the Value Added Tax Act, 2014, any business entity achieving or expecting to achieve a taxable turnover of 100,000,000 Tsh within any 12-month period must compulsorily register for 18% VAT.
