Parental Protection Rights in Uganda

  • Maternity Leave (Section 56): Female employees are entitled to 60 working days on full pay. At least 4 weeks should be taken after child delivery.
  • Dismissal Protection: Section 56(4) strictly prohibits an employer from terminating the employment of a female employee on grounds of pregnancy, childbirth, or maternity leave.
  • Paternity Leave (Section 57): A male employee is entitled to 4 working days of paid paternity leave upon the birth of his child or miscarriage of his wife, to be taken within the first month.
  • Medical Complications Extension: An employee who suffers illness arising out of pregnancy or childbirth is entitled to an extension of leave up to 8 weeks.
