Understanding the Ofgem Energy Price Cap

1. What is the Ofgem Price Cap and how does it work?

The Energy Price Cap is set quarterly by the energy regulator Ofgem under the Domestic Gas and Electricity (Tariff Cap) Act 2018. It does NOT limit the total maximum amount you pay on your bill; rather, it sets the maximum unit rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and the maximum daily standing charge that suppliers can charge customers on default standard variable tariffs.

2. What are the Typical Domestic Consumption Values (TDCV)?

Ofgem evaluates typical dual-fuel household consumption using standardized benchmarks:

  • Low Usage (1-2 bed flat): 1,800 kWh electricity and 7,500 kWh gas.
  • Medium Usage (2-3 bed house - Ofgem Average): 2,700 kWh electricity and 11,500 kWh gas.
  • High Usage (4+ bed detached house): 4,100 kWh electricity and 17,000 kWh gas.

3. Why are standing charges so high in the UK?

Standing charges are fixed daily costs (currently around 60p/day for electricity and 31p/day for gas) paid regardless of how much energy you consume. These charges cover the cost of maintaining the physical pipes and wires (National Grid and DNOs), operating emergency supplier-of-last-resort rescues, and government environmental and social scheme obligations.
