How to Remove 20% VAT
To extract net price from a VAT-inclusive gross amount, you divide by 1.20 (not multiply by 0.80). Multiplying by 0.80 deducts 20% of the gross rather than finding the true 20% net markup.
What is the Flat Rate Scheme?
HMRC's Flat Rate Scheme simplifies accounting for small businesses. You charge your clients standard 20% VAT, but pay HMRC a lower flat percentage based on your industry, keeping the difference as profit.
Limited Cost Trader Trap (16.5%)
If your business spends less than 2% of turnover or £1,000/year on relevant physical goods (excluding software, laptops, travel), you are classified as a limited cost trader and must use the higher 16.5% rate.
